UK customers now more focussed on recycling

French business Damart conducted a poll of 2,000 UK adults to find out more about their thoughts on sustainability. The findings showed that 55% leave sustainability behind when shopping, often buying items without thinking carefully about their purchase, with many of them having an average of nine pieces of unworn clothing taking up space in their wardrobes.

The research also indicated the following points:

• UK adults spend an average of £415.18 per year on new clothes

• Although there are many incentive-led, in-store recycling schemes, 'only' 50% of Britons have ever made use of one of these.

• 91% regularly donate their unwanted clothing to charity, making it the most popular way for people to get rid of their old clothes.

• 28% donate items as often as every three months, while 48% donate clothes to charity every six months.

• 79% claim to recycle their old clothing via their local recycling banks and 72% are donating clothing to friends and family,

Finally, Damart found that Norwich has the most sustainability-focused population in the UK, scoring 69 out of 100 for making sustainable fashion choices this year.
